Health and LiveSmart LogoWellness Program for LCCC Employees and their Spouses

LiveSmart is the health and wellness program developed for Lorain County Community College's full-time employees and their spouses by the college’s Health Insurance Review and Wellness Committee (HIRWC) as a proactive approach to reducing health care costs. The premise behind the LiveSmart Program is that if employees and their spouses learn to lead healthier lifestyles, their quality of life will improve; they won’t need to use the health care system as frequently as they might have otherwise; and their out-of-pocket expenses, as well as the college's claim costs will be reduced accordingly.

LiveSmart! Newsletter

This monthly newsletter provides the latest in health-care information

If you are enrolled in one of the college’s group medical insurance plans and would like to have your medical insurance  premium significantly reduced, effective January 1, 2010 or if you are not enrolled in the college’s medical plans, but would like to receive a cash bonus, you will want to earn the LiveSmart Level I Health Care Incentive. To earn the incentive you will need to 1) see your physician for some type of preventive health care between now and October 30, 2009 and 2) complete the online Health Risk Assessment (HRA) which will be available from October 12 - 30, 2009.  If you are currently paying discounted medical premiums and wish to continue doing so in 2010, you will need to earn the Level I Incentive again this year.

In conjunction with your annual preventive care visit, you will need to have your physician complete the Preventive Care Verification form.  Please make sure your physician understands that test results and medical records are not being requested, only confirmation that you have had some type of preventive care during 2009.  Be sure that your physician also understands that in order for your preventive care tests to be covered at 100%, he/she will need to assign a “routine/preventive care” versus “medical” diagnostic billing code to the tests.

If you already had a preventive health care visit earlier this calendar year, you can still have your doctor complete and sign the Preventive Care Verification form on your behalf.  Please note that employees are not required to participate in the LiveSmart Level I Health Care Incentive and spouses are not being asked to participate at this time.

The online HRA will be available for you to complete from October 12 - 30, 2009 and you will receive information at a later date regarding the web address to use.  To complete the HRA, you will need to know your height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, normal resting pulse rate, % of body fat, total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and HDL (good) cholesterol levels, as well as your triglyceride and glucose levels.  Consequently, you may want to wait to complete the assessment until after you have had the preventive care visit with your physician or have participated in the free biometric screenings that will be available during the annual LiveSmart Health Fair, which will be held on campus October 28 & 29, 2009.

The results of your online HRA will be sent directly to the University of Michigan's Health Management Research Center.  They in turn will provide the college with an aggregate summary of results, which does not include any personally identifiable health information.

Annual LiveSmart Health Fair

The annual LiveSmart Health Fair, which provides the opportunity for full-* and part-time LCCC employees and their spouses to receive biometric screenings and seasonal flu shots, will be held October 28 & 29, 2009 from 7:00 am - 11:00 am in SP 106/107.  Registration will be available from September 21 - October 9, 2009.  Notices regarding registration will be forthcoming.

The biometric screenings are designed to assist you in identifying potential health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels.  Individual screening results are confidential and include measurements for height, weight, body mass index, and blood pressure.  A fasting** finger-stick blood test will also be done to measure your total blood cholesterol, HDL and LDL, triglyceride, and glucose levels.  When you are finished with your screenings, which will take approximately 15 minutes, you will have the opportunity to review your results with a nurse.  Seasonal flu shots will also be available during the Health Fair at a cost of $15 per participant with payment made through payroll deduction.

*For full-time employees to earn the LiveSmart Level I Health Care Incentive, they must complete an online health risk assessment and obtain some type of preventive health care from their physician.  The Health Fair provides an opportunity for them to obtain biometric screening results, which they can use in completing their health risk assessment.  The Health Fair does not however substitute for the requirement that employees see their physician for some type of preventive care.

**Do not eat for 9-12 hours before your scheduled biometric screening.  Be sure though to drink plenty of water before your appointgment as this keeps you hydrated and makes the finger-stick process easier.  If you cannnot wait, you may drink coffee, but with no cream or sugar/sweetener.  Continue to take any medications as prescribed/directed by your doctor.
